Weekend in Wuhan 武汉

Over the weekend Bev and I visited the capital city of Hubei Province: Wuhan. We were fortunate to stay with an acquaintance who I met through someone in Blacksburg- he was a marine biologist of some sort and has been to Blacksburg many times! They lived in a beautiful, homey apartment with a Western toilet and guest room and everything, it was amazing. The family was so nice and hospitable. They made our agendas for Saturday and Sunday and made sure we got everywhere safe and sound.  Wuhan is a HUGE city- and don't underestimate my HUGE (8,494 km2(3,279 sq mi) and a population of roughly 10 607 700 CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT) . We only got to see a (very) small part of it, but I think we saw the most beautiful portion. Unfortunately the very famous provincial museum was closed during our visit- which only means we must go back!

Someone please tell me what is going on here...
Hubei Provincial Museum was closed (Oh no!) but luckily the Hubei Art Museum right across the street was open- and proved to have some pretty cool art inside.

A mini Chinese city- absolutely perfect.

This was my favorite.

Whatup dude
Wuhan- what a classic modern Chinese city
Yellow Crane Tower (Huang He Lou) is one of China's most famous towers.
Unfortunately it's fame also means a LOT of people.

So China.

I thought this was really cool. What a unique skill to have!

The Flowers of Spring

Xiuxi -naptime in China- no matter where you are.
The yellow flowers are rapeseed blossoms. They are all over and I absolutely love them. Fun fact: the oil used to cook in Huarong is predominantly rapeseed oil

At the back of one of my classes- pretty funny I thought.
Cool noodle place in fancy Changsha
Midservice Conference reunion and Beverly's birthday dinner at the Mao restaurant!
REAL good food.
Bday girl even got a cake
Bus back to Huarong

Here, an ode to Rapeseeds blossoms:

Rapeseed Fields

                                  By  Luye

Everywhere on the island the Rapeseed flowers
are in blossom.  We should christen them Official Flower

Of The Island In The Center Of The Yangtze River.
It's April, and now they begin to understand the world.

Over and over they say love and love.  Even their
eyelashes are golden. They speak in bright voices.

They make the sky dizzy. They cover the fields,
an enormous, outstretched coat, plain cloth a country

girl has painted with yellow flowers, its patterns
wavering shapes marchers form in a Flower Day

parade, blooms plaited into their hair, bouquets
in their hands. Here, the world's a floodlit stage, singers

trilling classic opera.  Soon it will darken as the show
ends, the audience applauding, and the curtain lowers.

Then the little flowers will bear the oil rich seeds
held deep in the vaults of their bodies and wait to be taken

away, new brides awaiting their husbands.  When we
walk to the end of the yellow fields at the banks of the Yangtze

River, the strong wind makes me suddenly lonely.  Can
so many Rapeseed flowers understand my northern accent?

Huarong at night. The frogs were so loud next to me in this picture.

The arrival of spring

Lantern festival dinner with one of my student's family out in the countryside
Before the start of the new term, I had a few extra days to travel so I decided to make my way down to Anren, a small town in southern Hunan, to visit a friend. She is also the only foreigner in her town and I wanted to see how our placements compared. Anren was beautiful! Unfortunately it rained the entire time I was there, but I was still charmed by the many old buildings and cute little town.

Anren is also the home of some Herb King (I can't remember quite what Sonee said, but it had something to do with this "Chinese Thor" as Sonee has dubbed him, who tried over 1000 herbs and contributed a lot to Traditional Chinese Medicine)

Loved loved loved this temple

After Anren, I went north a bit to the big city Zhuzhou. Zhuzhou is possibly one of my favorite cities in Hunan- it's not as big and overwhelming as the capital city Changsha, but still offers everything and is clean and beautiful. Every time I visit Zhuzhou I absolutely love it. We also got lucky with the weather- beautiful warm sunshine! YAY SPRING

And to bring a beautiful day to an end, might as well paddle boat in the lake!
Back in Huarong, new deliciously green veggies are hanging among drying clothes.
